In a city built from giants' bones, people rely on hunters to keep them prosperous and safe, and everyone knows that giants are violent, senseless creatures . . . aren't they? But when an accident leaves Jacq lost and injured in the wilderness, she ends up face-to-face with Corman, a frightened young giant-. Corman has just lost his dad to hunters, and he and Jacq must learn to trust each other if they're going to find their ways home. But as they start finding out the truth about giant hunting-and the shadowy Resistance Jacq has grown up hating-they discover there's more at stake than either of them know.
Junior Library Guild. "A Beatrix Potter biography that brings to life the creatures of the natural world she loved and the many endearing animal characters she created. Beatrix Potter remains one of the most beloved creators of children's books, beginning with The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902 and continuing through 23 more Little Tale titles. Potter's stories featured a world of unforgettable animal characters that have entertained youngsters for several generations. But Potter was more than a children's author--she was also an accomplished artist, a forward-looking farmer, and a committed preservationist. In her later years, she helped save over 4,000 acres of farms and wooded areas in the Lake District region of England. Born in 1866, Beatrix grew up in a big house in London. Her Victorian parents rarely interacted with Beatrix and hesitated to let her associate with other children fearing illness. She was taught at home by governesses. She relished family vacations in the countryside, where she could roam freely in the nearby fields and forests and observe the wonders of nature. Back home, confined mainly to the third floor of the house, Beatrix and her younger brother invented their own entertainment. Over the years, they brought all kinds of animals into their nursery, a veritable zoo. Beatrix, who loved to draw, spent hours every day sketching each creature, especially the mice and rabbits. A favorite among her many animals was the rabbit she named Peter Piper. Perhaps because of her solitary existence Beatrix developed a rich inner life centered on the animals in their natural habitats and in her imagination. Her children's books evolved from illustrated letters she wrote to the children of her former governess, Annie Moore. This picture book biography recounts the life of Beatrix Potter in broad strokes with a focus on the joy and comfort she found in her animals, real and imagined. It is a charming book written and illustrated by a bright young talent and it will appear in time for the 160th anniversary of Potter's birth. With the reissue of the Little Tales in 2002, a new generation of children have come to love Beatrix Potter and all her wonderful characters"-- Provided by publisher.

When Bear arrives at the Woody Woods for the first time, he is looking for a friend. But it seems like all the friends are already taken. Then he meets Bird, who is looking for something, too-the Puffy Fluffy Octopus Cloud! Bear decides to help her look for it, and so begins an unexpected adventure . . . Will they ever find that octopus-shaped cloud? Perhaps they might find something even better!"--Provided by publisher.

Junior Library Guild. "It's Snail's birthday, and he decides he wants to see the sun set by the sea, which is a long way away. Soon he meets Mouse, who's going in the same direction and offers to carry Snail on her back. "That's what friends are for," says Mouse. Then Snail runs into Frog, who takes him hopping another part of the distance. Snail is so tired by then that he climbs up on a large rock to rest, sad that he may not make it to the sea in time. But when he opens his eyes again, there it is: a brilliant sunset, right in front of him! "How did I get here?" wonders Snail, exclaiming at the sunset's beauty. Could that be the voice of Tortoise below him, chiming in to agree? With a rich palette and a gentle narrative, picture book creator Petr Horacek pays quiet tribute to friendship, kindness, and the wonders of nature-and, of course, special birthday wishes"--.

Junior Library Guild. "Who would have known on Monday that the week ahead would be such a busy one? It all starts when Maud finds a teapot that is obviously haunted (and very hungry). EEEK! The days continue with Maud's attempt to sell spiders (and juice) from a sidewalk stand; a mega-toothy discovery; a ghost family taking over the dollhouse; and a visit to Agnes the witch, who brews up a dynamite soup. Then comes Maud's yard sale, which is a lot of work but a great success, rounding out a very full week. But wait, could that be a teapot coming around again, on Sunday? In this slightly gothic tour through the days of the week, the delight is in the details as illustrations portray Maud and her family and friends among the familiar objects and activities of childhood, with just enough of a quirky twist to please the young vampire lovers among us"--Provided by publisher.
